Description
Replace Alfa Laval Seal Alfa Laval Elastomer Bellows Seal

Replace Alfa Laval Seal Alfa Laval Elastomer Bellows Seal

1. Temperature Range

  • It can typically operate within a wide temperature range. For most common elastomer materials used in the bellows, such as Nitrile Rubber (NBR), the operating temperature range is approximately from - 20°C to 120°C. However, for some specialty elastomers like Fluoroelastomer (FKM), the temperature range can be extended to - 40°C to 200°C. This allows the seal to be used in various industrial applications where different temperature conditions prevail.

2. Pressure Capacity

  • The seal is designed to handle different pressure levels. It can generally withstand pressures up to 15 bar (for standard configurations). In some enhanced designs, with additional reinforcement and optimized construction, it can even operate at pressures up to 25 bar. This makes it suitable for a multitude of pumping and fluid handling systems where moderate to relatively high pressures are encountered.

3. Bellows Material

  • The elastomer bellows is made from high-quality rubber compounds. As mentioned, Nitrile Rubber (NBR) offers good resistance to oils and aliphatic hydrocarbons, making it a popular choice for many general industrial applications. Fluoroelastomer (FKM), on the other hand, provides excellent resistance to aggressive chemicals, acids, and alkalis, as well as high-temperature stability. The choice of bellows material depends on the specific fluid medium and operating conditions of the application.

4. Seal Face Materials

  • The seal faces are often made from hard materials to ensure durability and effective sealing. Commonly used materials include Silicon Carbide (SiC), which has high hardness, good wear resistance, and chemical inertness. Another option is Tungsten Carbide (WC), which offers enhanced toughness and resistance to impact and abrasion. These seal face materials work in conjunction with the elastomer bellows to provide a reliable seal.

5. Shaft Sizes

  • The Alfa Laval elastomer bellows Seal is available for a wide range of shaft sizes. It can be fitted onto shafts with diameters starting from as small as 12 mm and going up to 150 mm. This versatility in shaft size compatibility enables it to be used in various types of equipment, from small laboratory pumps to larger industrial process pumps.

6. Axial Movement Compensation

  • One of the key features of the elastomer bellows seal is its ability to compensate for axial shaft movement. It can typically handle axial displacements of up to ± 3 mm. This is crucial in applications where the shaft may experience thermal expansion or contraction, or where there is some misalignment or vibration. The bellows' flexibility allows it to adapt to these changes and maintain a proper seal.

7. Radial Runout Tolerance

  • The seal can tolerate a certain amount of radial runout. It can generally handle a radial runout of up to 0.5 mm. This tolerance ensures that the seal can function effectively even if the shaft is not perfectly centered or if there is some eccentricity in the rotating assembly.

8. Chemical Compatibility

  • Thanks to the choice of elastomer and seal face materials, the seal exhibits good chemical compatibility. It can be used with a wide variety of fluids, including water, oils, solvents, acids, and alkalis. However, the specific chemical resistance depends on the particular elastomer and seal face material combination selected. For example, with an NBR bellows and SiC seal faces, it is suitable for most hydrocarbon-based oils and mild aqueous solutions. For more aggressive chemicals, an FKM bellows and WC seal faces would be a more appropriate choice.
